A follow-up to the AOL electoral map post: the map above shows (to the best of my clumsy image manipulation ability) how the McCain and Obama maps differ. There is, indeed, a lot of overlap.

I still can’t really figure what this map is showing or how it’s generating its data.

My guess would be that anytime somebody from that “sector” indicated that they planned to vote for an individual, it would light up that sector. Therefore, it seems reasonable to believe that any sufficiently populated area would almost surely indicate both.

Of course, this is a ridiculous model, because it’s not like the pop vs soda map where the dialect is so beautifully localized. People voting for both candidates are spread throughout the country, thus making this map a pile of rubbish.
