Wrong again!
This photo shows that the tower was probably bolted together on a flange rather than slipped together. I don’t know as much about bolted joints as I do about slip joints, but I’m pretty sure this invalidates my “squirting” hypothesis. More likely: some of the bolts got sheared off from the initial impact and the rest failed from the torque resulting from the tower starting to bend over.

Perhaps it’s related somehow to this concept?
